After six attempts and nearly three months into the 2024 season, the Dallas Cowboys finally secured their first home win, defeating the New York Giants 27-20 on Thanksgiving Day.
Dallas frustrated and flustered Giants quarterback Drew Lock throughout the game, earning their second consecutive victory in a season that had largely been disappointing. The win marked their first at AT&T Stadium after a winless 0-5 start at home. The Giants (2-10) are enduring an even more difficult season.
Lock, who made his first start for the Giants after joining the team in the offseason, struggled mightily. DeMarvion Overshown made an impact in the first half, breaking up a screen pass before intercepting a tipped ball for a pick-six, putting the Cowboys on the board first.
The Giants had an opportunity to tie or take the lead early in the second half, but Lock was stripped of the ball on a sack by Eric Kendricks. Overshown recovered the fumble, setting up a 4-yard touchdown run by Rico Dowdle to push the Cowboys’ lead to 20-10, essentially sealing the victory. A touchdown pass from Cooper Rush to Brandin Cooks extended the lead to 27-10 in the third quarter.
Despite a late field goal and a touchdown scramble from Lock that cut the Cowboys’ lead to 27-20, the Giants were unable to mount a comeback. Dallas’ defense sacked Lock six times, forced a turnover, and intercepted a pass. Lock completed 21 of 32 passes for 178 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.
On offense, the Cowboys dominated the ground game with Dowdle rushing for 112 yards and a touchdown. Rush went 21-of-36 for 195 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers.
While the win did little to improve the Cowboys’ slim playoff hopes in the absence of injured quarterback Dak Prescott, it was a much-needed victory after several disappointing home performances. For the Giants, the loss further sinks their season, with Lock now the third quarterback to start for the team following the benching and release of Daniel Jones. New York's 2-10 record is the worst in the NFL.
